Vegan Burger Buns – soft & tender

Airy, fluffy, buttery and soft burger buns, perfect for your vegan burger. Make burger buns with this easy recipe at home (you can also freeze them).

The perfect comfort food

Who doesn’t love biting into a juicy burger and enjoying every bite to its fullest? And the burger bun plays a bigger role in a burger than you think! Because even if the vegan patty, the sauces and the vegetables are tasty and juicy, the burger bun can change everything:
an airy and fluffy bun that nestles around the filling, freshly baked and still slightly warm, with a crispy crust and buttery soft on the inside will bring all burger fans to heaven!

Better than every bought burger bun

Finished products don’t have a particularly good reputation. No wonder, because if you look at the list of ingredients, you usually only know half of the ingredients. And if you don’t even know the name of an ingredient, who knows what’s in it and how (un)healthy it is for your body. And if you have the opportunity to make burger buns yourself and this buns taste even better and fresher than the ones you bought, then there are probably no doubts left!

Maybe you’re still discouraged to bake your own bread? But don’t worry, because you should know:
1. It’s easier than you think. Most of the work is done by the yeast, the resting time and the oven.
2. No master has fallen from heaven. So when you’re going to bake bread for the first time, don’t be a perfectionist and give yourself enough time and practice.

This burger buns are:

  • vegan and lactose-free
  • made from simple ingredients

Vegan Burger Buns

Airy, fluffy, buttery and soft burger buns, perfect for your vegan burger. Make burger buns with this easy recipe at home (you can also freeze them).
Servings: 10 buns
Author: Lena

Ingredients

  • 500 g wheat flour alternatively whole grain flour
  • 7 g dried yeast
  • 100 ml warm water not hotter than 25 degrees C or 77 degrees F
  • 140 ml vegan milk of your choice unsweetened
  • 80 g melted vegan butter or margarine and more for coating
  • 20 g rice, maple or agave sirup
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt

For topping:

  • 2 tbsp vegan milk + pinch of salt
  • sesame or chia seeds

Instructions

Make the dough

  • Mix all the ingredients for the dough and knead well for at least 10 minutes with your hands or a kneading machine. While kneading, work on a surface greased with oil and do not add flour to the dough, even if it is a bit sticky.
  • Place the dough in a bowl, grease it with some oil so to prevent from drying out and let it rest for an hour.

Form the buns

  • Remove the dough from the bowl and divide it into 80g dough pieces. Then take a piece and form it into a smooth ball. Put your hand on the piece of dough and press it slightly on the work surface, dragging it in circular motions until a ball is formed. ( If you can't manage that, you can just form balls).
  • Place the dough balls on a baking tray lined with baking paper, cover them with a cloth and let them rest for another 30 minutes. They should then have risen to almost double their size.

Bake the buns

  • Preheat the oven to 190 degrees C or 347 degrees F.
  • Brush the dough with the milk and salt mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds or other seeds like chia seeds. Then bake the buns in the oven for 15-17 minutes until they have a golden-brown color.
  • Take the buns out of the oven and immediately brush them with some melted margarine or seed oil to give them that classic gloss.
  • Attention: When the buns cool completely, they lose their fluffiness and are no longer that soft. So it's best to warm them up before you enjoy them. Before you assemble the burgers, you can fry the insides of the burger buns in a pan until crispy and warm.

Notes

You can easily freeze the burger buns after they’re baked and take them out of the freezer anytime, grill the insides until crispy, and fill them any way you like.
