Meals to make with the tortillas:

  • Wraps are randomly filled tortillas. There are many variations and fillings that can be used, such as pumpkin hummus, lentils, lettuce, fried vegetables or vegan cheese.
  • Burritos – a Mexican classic with hearty fillings. The tortilla is filled in the middle with kidney beans, corn, tomatoes, lettuce, rice and herbs such as coriander and then closed and rolled up. Of course, hot sauces can not be missing.
  • Tacos – this fast food dish comes from Mexico too. The tortillas are baked in the oven to make them slightly crispy & crunchy. The crispy boats are filled with fresh ingredients of the Mexican cuisine.
  • Piadina is a name for thin flat bread from Italy. Here, half the tortilla is filled (mostly with ham and cheese) and then the other half is folded over. I like to fill the piadina with smoked tofu, vegan cheese or vegetables and salad.
  • Side dish to serve with a warm curry, a soup, or my absolute favorite: vegan chili sin carne. You can fill tortillas with it or dip them in it, an absolute dream.
  • Bread substitute – when you’re bored from classic bread.

Variations

In addition to the classic wheat tortillas made with only 4 ingredients, there are many other variations for the quick and easy flatbread. If you want to make your tortillas more exciting, you can mix different ingredients like tomato paste, spinach, fresh herbs or spices like turmeric into the batter for flavor and color. Some ideas and recipes:

Herb tortillas: Simply add 2 tablespoons of fresh or dried herbs of your choice to the dough.

Spinach tortillas: with protein-rich peas and healthy spinach in the dough.

Tomato tortillas: red appealing colour, exciting taste, light paprika note.

Easy homemade Tortillas / Chapati

Make delicious and crispy tortillas at homewith only 4 pantry-staple ingredients!
Servings: 8 big tortillas
Author: Lena

Ingredients

  • 450 g all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp oil of your choice like sunflower seed oil
  • 220 ml warm water
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  • First mix the flour, oil, salt and water with a spoon in a bowl. Then place the dough on the work surface.
  • Knead the dough well for 10-15 minutes to make it soft and smooth (the longer you knead the dough, the smoother the tortillas become).
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal parts (or 10-16 parts if you want to make small tortillas) and form small balls. Take a ball, flatten it slightly by hand and roll it with a rolling pin to a round and flat disc with a thickness of about 1-2 mm. At this step, you should not add flour; work on a clean surface.
  • Heat a pan on the stove on medium heat without grease. Put a tortilla in the pan and let it bake. After about 2 minutes, the tortilla should form bubbles. Then you can turn it over and bake again for 1 minute on the other side. Make sure, that the pan does not get too hot, otherwise the flatbread will burn.
  • Serve the tortillas when they´re still warm e. g. filled with vegetables or as a side dish with a curry or stew. When the tortillas cool down, they don't bend anymore, but they will break.

Serve the tortillas with:

Vegan Chili sin carne

Healthy beetroot – red wine dip with white sesame
